    The Letter

The fears promulgated by marijuana prohibitionists have proven unfounded. Teenage marijuana use is lower since legalization because licensed dispensaries check ID whereas black market drug dealers don’t. Traffic fatalities have not risen. Users have not had the terrible health effects predicted. Opiate-caused deaths have fallen by 25% in states where marijuana is available.

One thing that has changed in those states is their economy. Tax revenues have added billions of dollars to state budgets. Crumbling infrastructure has been repaired. Thousands of jobs have been created. Tourism has increased.

Marijuana legalization is not only a money-maker for government and the private sector but it’s good social policy as well. Law enforcement would be able to redirect resources to combat a host of more serious crimes than people smoking marijuana. The lives ruined by the stigma of an arrest record… the people sitting in jail for marijuana offenses… the families broken up because a member is in prison. Marijuana legalization would put an end to these injustices.

I urge you to support the legislation that would accomplish this sensible goal. Senator Krueger has such a bill in the New York State Senate (S3040) and Assemblywoman Crystal-Stokes has one in the Assembly (A3506). Please do whatever you can to help them become law.

Did you know that State Senate and Assembly each have a bill to legalize and regulate recreational cannabis?
